About City
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay. Founded by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, the governor of Buenos Aires on December 24, 1726, the city got its name from a Portuguese word "Monte vide eu" which means "I see a mountain". The complete name of the city is San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo. From the early 19th century till the 20th century, the city was under the British influence. It became the capital of Uruguay in 1828. It is now the largest city and the chief port of the country. Twice larger than any other cities in the country, Montevideo is regarded as the primate city.
