The city, which was the political and cultural capital of Russia in the 10th to 12th centuries, was devastated in 1240 during the Mongol invasion. During the 19th century, the city prospered and in 1921 after the Russian Revolution, the city became an important city of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since 1934 Kiev was upgraded to the status of the capital of Soviet Ukraine. It is now the largest city in Ukraine.
