Kiev City

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. The name 'Kiev' has been derived from the name of Kyi, the legendary founder of the city. It is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural center of Eastern Europe. Founded in the 5th century as a trading post in the land of Early East Slavs, Kiev is a national-level subordinated municipality. The city, which was the political and cultural capital of Russia in the 10th to 12th centuries, was devastated in 1240 during the Mongol invasion. During the 19th century, the city prospered and in 1921 after the Russian Revolution, the city became an important city of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since 1934 Kiev was upgraded to the status of the capital of Soviet Ukraine. It is now the largest city in Ukraine.



Area & Location: Situated in the north central part of the country along the Dnieper River, Kiev is located at 50°27'00? Latitude North and 30°31'24? Longitude East. The city is connected by the mouth of the Desna River and the Kiev Reservoir in the north, and the Kaniv Reservoir in the south. The city covers a total area of 839 sq. km. Around 2,660,401 people reside in the city with a density of 3,299 per sq. km.

Kiev Passenger Railway Station is the long-distance passenger terminal in Kiev. Buses and short-range trains include the suburban transportation in the city. Metros, buses, trolleys and trams add to the local public transport system in Kiev. The funicular in the city carries around 15,000 passengers daily.
