Manchester United

Manchester United is an English soccer club, situated at the Old Trafford stadium in Trafford, Greater Manchester. Manchester United is perhaps the most popular and successful soccer club in the world to win the English Premier League title as many as nine times.

Manchester United: An Interesting Start

Formed as Newton Heath L and YR Football Club in 1878, the Manchester United assumed its present name in 1902. Ever since the origin of Manchester United, it has witnessed a number of victories. Winning the Division One Title in 1908 is considered as the greatest achievements of Manchester United. This was followed by the FA Cup in 1909 and another soccer title in 1911.

Under the able guidance of Matt Busby, who was appointed the club's manager in 1945, Manchester United was steered to a series of victories in the 1952, 1956 and the 1957 soccer championships. It was at this time that the United emerged to be the first British football club to contend the European Cup and reach its semi finals. The reign of Busby proved to be a golden one for the club, which started with the winning of a FA Cup title in 1963. The first European Cup title was also won by the United in 1968, by defeating the powerful Benfica in the final.

Manchester United continued to hold their best world position, by gaining victories in the 1977, 1983, 1985
and 1990 FA Cups. With Alex Ferguson as the new manager, Manchester United won the European Cup Winner's Cup of the season. It was in the post 1990 eras that the reputation of the club became associated with the achievements of the English Premier League.

Manchester United and Premier League

The achievements of the English Premier League are intrinsically associated with the fame of the Manchester United. The 1992-93 season saw the first Premier League winning the first FA Carling Premiership title, which continued consistently in the years 1993-94, 1996-97, 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-01. In between, the League won the FA Cup twice in 1993-94 and 1995-96 and again in 2003-04. The 2002-03 and 2006-07 Barclaycard Premiership titles and the 2005-06 League Cup title were also won by the League while playing for the Manchester United Club. However, the year 1998-99 was the best in the history of the United, with Premier League winning the European Cup, the FA Cup and the FA Carling Premiership titles all at a time.

Today, the Manchester United is the second wealthiest soccer clubs in the world, generating the highest revenue. It is also the founder-member of the European Club Association. Gary Neville is the present captain of the club. Ben Foster, Patrice Evra, Wes Brown and Park Ji-Sung are among the star players who gave brilliant performances.
