Middleton, which lies six miles to the north of Manchester. Before joining this band Mark was with Clichés, whereas Reg and Dave were in Years. These three artists initially started without a drummer and received the attention of John Peel, the famous Radio 1 DJ, who later on joined them as a drummer. "In Shreds" was their first single album released on CBS, which ranked 42 on John Peel's Festive Fifty in 1982.
Their contract with CBS failed as there was some disagreement on how they should sound. Later on they signed with Statik, which was distributed by Virgin. The bands debut album was "Script of the Bridge", which was recorded in Rochdale within a period of six-weeks. The band was upset when they discovered that the reduced version was released by MCA in the US. As a result they separated from Statik and parted their way, but were tied by contractual obligations.
The second album, "What Does Anything Mean? Basically", was signed with Geffen. After the death of Tony the band broke apart and "Strange Times" was their last album. With the rise of the new millennium The Chameleons united after fifteen years and a new 'unplugged' album 'Strip' was released.
