Manchester Mayor


Glynn Evans was elected the Manchester Lord Mayor in 2007. Until 1892 from 1838, the City Council of Manchester was headed by the Manchester Mayor. But, after 1892 till date, the Lord Mayor heads the Manchester City Council. The Lord Mayors are primarily elected as Councilors, who are then selected as Lord Mayors by the elected body of Councilors. The Lord Mayors are elected in Manchester for a period of one year.

The development of the city of Manchester is taken care of by the Lord Mayor. He is assisted in his job by the Councilors of the city. The Lord Mayor decides on the departments that the Councilors have to take care of. Sir Thomas Potter was the first Mayor of Manchester, who held the chair from 1838 till 1840.

Glynn Evans is the present Lord Mayor of Manchester who was elected in 2007 and his tenure ends in the year 2008. During his tenure as a Lord Mayor he will be mainly dealing with the development of children and young people. Lord Mayor Evans keenly believes that
children should be raised in a loving and affectionate environment so that they can start their life in the best possible way.

Glynn Evans was born and brought up in Wythenshawe. Throughout his life Evans lived there and provided devoted service to the local community of the area. For the development of the community he founded the Northern Moor Tenants & Residents Association. For 26 years, Glynn Evans was the governor of Rackhouse Junior School and presently is a member of the governing body of Parklands High School.

As a councilor, he was first elected in May 1994 for Brooklands ward. Glynn Evans has held a number of respectable positions in various departments in Manchester City Council.

In 1996, he was selected as the Deputy Chair of Arts and Leisure Committee and he was the first to be the Executive Member for Culture and Leisure in between 1999-2003. He is also the Director of Parkway Green Housing Trust and the Zion Arts Board.
