The Library Theatre Company, Manchester plays a major role in the cultural life of the city. It was founded in 1952 at the lecture theater of the Central Library in Manchester. The company has been consistently involved in the production of plays, dramas, comedies and musical theaters. The company produces huge numbers of UK and European premieres. The works of some of the eminent writers produced by the company are Terrence McNally, Stephen Sondheim and Neil Simon. Library Theatre Company of Manchester is also known for the successful productions of some of the best 20th century American drama, specially the plays of David Mamet, Arthur Miller, Bertolt Brecht and Tennessee Williams.

Some of the notable recent productions of The Library Theatre Company include Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of Oliver Twist, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Tim Firth’s The Safari Party and Arthur Miller’s The Price. The Company has either won or been nominated by the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards for nearly 30 awards in the past five years.

The recent productions of the Company are a mixture of contemporary and classical drama. During Christmas, popular plays are staged for families and children. It has close connections with national companies like Out of Joint, and regional companies, such as Lip Service and Rasa. The works of these regional and national theater groups are regularly staged in the Library Theater. The Library Theatre Company is also involved in social service as it supports several educational projects of the local community including the Manchester Arts Education Initiative.

Reaching Library Theatre Company

Reaching The Library Theatre Company is very easy as
it is well connected with all the means of transport like bus, trams and train. Several bus services stop outside the Central Library and at Piccadilly Gardens, which is five-minute walking from the theater. The Metro trams that operate from from Bury, Altrincham and Eccles stop outside the Central Library. Both main line stations Picadilly and Victoria are within twenty-minutes walking distance from the Library Theatre.

Parking

Excellent parking facilities are available in the Library Theatre. You can use the NCP Car Parks at GMEX opposite the Bridgewater Hall and when traveling from the south of the city, on Oxford Street, at the junction with Great Bridgewater Street. From the theater it takes only 5 minutes to reach these parking lots.

Cyclists

There are cycle racks positioned on the pavements to the left-hand side of the Central Library and to the right hand side of the main entrance. Always ensure your cycle is securely locked.

By Bus

A number of buses stop directly outside the Central Library and at Piccadilly Gardens, a five-minute walk away.

Rail Stations

You can walk up to the two main rail stations within 20 minutes from the Library Theater. It is advisable to catch the Metro from Piccadilly and Victoria Stations, which takes approximately 10 minutes. St Peter's Square is just outside the theatre. Manchester Oxford Road station is a five-minute walk along Oxford Street.

Metrolink

Metro trams from Bury, Altrincham and Eccles stop directly outside the Central Library.
