The Initial Years of JW Lees Breweries
The brewery was established in 1828 when the cotton manufacturer John Lees retired and started this business. He first named it as Greengate Brewery or Manchester Real Ale Brewers. The company was later renamed as J.W. Lees & Co. Brewers, when John William Lees, the

grandson of John Lees succeeded the company in 1876. Today, the sixth generation of the family owns and runs the business.
