Imperial War Museum is one of the most popular museums in Manchester as well as in Britain. The museum displays objects related to the effects and result of war and conflict. The museum is also famous for its modern and unconventional architecture. It was designed by award-winning international architect Daniel Libeskind, symbolizing a world torn apart by war and conflict. The museum is popularly known as IWM North. Imperial War Museum is situated at a scenic location on the Quays, a waterfront destination just 2 miles from Manchester city centre.
The Imperial War Museum was established in the year1917. The museum served as a memorial to those people who either died or suffered in the First World War. Since its establishment, the Museum has expanded and includes every single aspect of the conflicts starting from the clashes between British and Commonwealth in 1914 till the present day.
How to Reach Imperial War Museum
The Imperial War Museum can be accessed very easily. There are direct tram services from Manchester Piccadilly, Deansgate railway stations and St Peter's Square. Harbour City is the nearest Metrolink station to Imperial War Museum. To reach the museum, one has to take the Eccles service and get down at Harbour City and walk along the pedestrian signs to The Lowry. The Museum is at a walking distance across the canal by footbridge. Visitors can also travel by bus 250 that plies from Piccadilly to Trafford Centre.

There are six Silos at the museum that are separate exhibition areas that display objects and collections of the wars that took place in the 20th and 21st Century. The exhibits include a wide array of materials like works of medals, art, diaries, photographs, uniforms and letters.
The Imperial War Museum is open seven days a week but is closed on 24th, 25th and 26th December. From March to October, the museum is open from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and from November to February it is open between 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. Last admission in the museum is allowed 30 minutes prior to the closing time.
