History of Crossley Motors

Crossley Motors Ltd was first commissioned on 11th April 1906 and re-registered with another company in the year 1910. Crossley Brothers owned this company as the vehicle manufacturing section. The first car was made in 1904 and showcased at the Paris motor Show in 1905. Since then the parent company could sense a bright future in this industry and decided to manufacture new machines and vehicles and thus build up a separate company. In 1920 Crossley Motors merged with the A V Roe and Company, commonly known as Avro. They finally sold the company to Armstrong Siddeley in 1928 to compensate the losses incurred in Willys-Overland-Crossley, company jointly owned by Crossley and Willys-Overland.

The first Crossley cars emerged in 1904 and were designed by chief engineer J S Critchley. He intended to build an "English Mercedes". The first model was a 22hp but shortly after they manufactured a larger model of 40hp, which had 4 cylinder engines, formed in two pairs and featured chain system to the back axle. The prominent features of the first car introduced many advanced features including lightweight pistons, pump cooling, an automatic carburetor and internal inflating brakes. Crossley Motors factory started the trend
supplying complete assembled cars. One 22hp or 4760cc model was exported to Australia in its initial years of production. Henry Ford also bought a 22hp engine, which fitted perfectly in one of his cars.
