History of Manchester Cathedral
Manchester Cathedral was built over a period of 600 years. The first Christian church was built in Manchester in the 7th century. Later on it was destroyed by the invading Vikings and by the order of King Edward the Elder, a new church was built in 923 near the previous site. This church was also mentioned in the Domesday Book as St. Mary's.
In the year 1215, the construction of the current building started within the Baron's Court beside Manor House. The Manor was owned by the Grisley family and their coat of arms is still related with the Cathedral.
The succession of the Grisley family finished in 1311, and the estate was passed to the de la Warre family by marriage. Between the years 1330 and 1360, the intricately carved entrance to the Lady Chapel and the tower was built. In 1421, King Henry V chartered it as a collegiate foundation and since then it has been

associated with education.Over the following centuries the church has been expanded many times by a number of notable figures of the society. The treasures of the church were plundered many times specially by Edward VI in 1550 and during the English Civil War in 1649. The Diocese of Manchester was formed in 1847 and the church was named as a cathedral.
The main architectural style of Manchester Cathedral is Perpendicular Gothic. The cathedral is adorned with many tall windows and flat fan-vaulted ceilings. The woodcarvings of the Ripon Carvers of the medieval period can be seen in the interior of the church. For its excellent architecture and ancient history it is included in the Grade I listed buildings in Manchester on January 25, 1952. A wide range of parish and historical archives belonging to 1421 are kept in the Cathedral. In 2003, a project began to provide an exhaustive catalog of the archive's contents to the public.
The morning services are held daily at 7:45 am and the Holy Communion at 8:00 am. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the Holy Communion is at 1:10 pm and Evening song is at 5:30 pm.
