Formed in 1975, the Buzzcocks of Manchester are a famous English punk band that significantly influenced and dominated the music scenario of the city. Pete Shelley, the renowned guitarist, lyricist and song writer had founded this band. The band name 'Buzzcocks' was inspired by a slang, which was in use during 1970s, meaning young stars. During their career, the Buzzcocks delivered several single hits. The audience loved their songs as they exhibited the wild punk energy.
Formation of Buzzcocks
Guitarist Pete Shelley and vocalist Howard Devoto were both students of Bolton Institute of Technology. They shared common musical interests, and were inspired by the works of Brian Eno a British musician. Americal hip hop punk music bands like 'The Stooges' influenced them a great deal. In the year 1975 Shelley and Devoto appointed a drummer giving birth to the new English punk band Buzzcocks. However, this band dissolved after few rehearsals.
During this time, 'Sex Pistols' another English music band belonging to the punk genre was gaining prominence in UK. After watching them perform, both Shelley and Devoto invited them to perform at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester. They appointed Steve Diggle as a guitarist and John Maher as a drummer and made their exciting debut, in the opening of the concert of the Sex Pistols. The performance was appreciated and there was no looking back. Along with other renowned music bands they performed at the two day 100 Club Punk Festival.

The same year Buzzcocks released their first 4 track EP, titled Spiral Scratch under their own label 'New Hormones'. They were the first band to release a record under their own label.
Buzzcocks contract with UAI – a significant turning point in the bands career
Buzzcocks, with the new band members like Steve Garvey on bass signed a contract with the UAI or United Artists Records. The first single was 'Orgasm Addict'. The songs in this album faced scathed criticisms, due to the bold lyrics, but nonetheless sold well. 'What do I Get?' the second solo release of the Buzzcocks was an instant hit. It claimed a position in UK Top 40 Charts. 'Shot by both Sides' was also released in 1978. The three LPs which were released by Buzzcocks were Love Bites, A Different Kind of Tension and Another Music in a Different Kitchen. The catchy rhythms, and the tremendous energy in their music mesmerized the audience.
