The Manchester Arndale is one of the most prominent shopping malls located in city center. This shopping arcade houses more than 200 shops, restaurants, major department stores, and fast food outlets. The ravishing structure of Manchester Arndale stands majestically on the old streets and alleys of Manchester, defying the old Victorian magnificence surrounding it. The shopping center was built at a huge sum of £100 million.
History of Manchester Arndale
The construction of Manchester Arndale started in 1972 and was completed in 1979. During that period, it was the largest covered shopping center in whole Europe. The shopping arcade covers nearly 30 acres of the old city center has two levels. The architects Hugh Wilson and Lewis Womersley have designed the center.
The IRA bombing of Manchester damaged Arndale in 1996. The western part of the center consisting of the Food Court, Mothercare, Argos, Voyagers Walk, WH Smith, JD Sports and Nike was completely damaged by the explosion. Since September 2003, an extensive redevelopment project was taken up to reconstruct the Arndale Center. The extension plan was taken up in three phases from September 2003 to October 2005 and to the final opening at the end of 2006.
