Alf Ainsworth was a renowned English professional footballer who hailed from Manchester, England. Born in July 31 1913, Alphonso Ainsworth, more popularly known as Alf Ainsworth established himself as a prominent professional footballer. In his career, he played football on behalf of many famous clubs including Manchester United and New Brighton. He died at the age of 61 on April 25, 1975.
The career of Alf Ainsworth as a footballer can be examined in three distinct phases, namely the pre war, war time and post war. Ainsworth started his career by playing for Ashton United and Cheshire County League. Later on in 1933 he was signed by the famous club Manchester United as an amateur player. debut in a home game against Bury on March 3, 1934. Ainsworth then moved on to join New Brighton in September 1935. He scored 39 goals in the 150 games he played throughout his career.
During World War II, after 1939 Alf Ainsworth played for several wartime leagues for a number of clubs. Accrington Stanley was his first wartime club he played for. He also played for Rochdale, Oldham Athletic and Southport. After the war he again went on to join his old favorite club New Brighton. Ainsworth succeeded in scoring 9 goals in his 28 appearances.
In his glorious career, he played for numerous youth and senior clubs. Ainsworth generally played in the position of inside forward as he was deft in dribbling the ball and exhibited excellent foot work. On December 1947 he was transferred to Congletown Club, and continued playing there till his retirement.
