Ludgate Hill

Being one of the most ancient hills of London, Ludgate Hill London was a colony of King Ludd and included churches like St Paul's Cathedral, St. Martin and Ludgate church.

The history of Ludgate Hill and St Paul's Cathedral

Ludgate Hill, widely known as one of the three ancient hills of London is imparted with historic significance. Located close to the gate of old Ludgate, the Ludgate Hill region houses the St Paul's Cathedral. This site was originally occupied by a Roman Temple dedicated to Roman Goddess Diana. During 1st century BC, the city of London was established by great King Ludd and the name of the hill is borrowed from ‘Ludd-deen’ or ‘Valley of Ludd’. The Cathedral of St. Paul’s is positioned on the summit of Ludgate Hill. The site of the cathedral was the main colony of renowned ruler Ludd. Ludgate or Roman Gate of Ludd was constructed just below the cathedral.

There is a blue commemorative inscription near the foot of the hill which presents the following lines "In a house near this site was published in 1702 The Daily Courant first London daily newspaper".

About Ludgate Street and Ludgate Hill Station

London Ludgate Hill also signifies a road which is extended towards the west from St. Paul's Churchyard to the Ludgate Circus. From Ludgate Circus this road is named as Fleet Street. Previously this road was a very narrow road of London known as Ludgate Street.

During the early 1870s, a number of narrow back streets of Ludgate Hill were swept off in order to construct the Ludgate Hill Station. This new railway station was positioned between Water Lane and New Bridge Street. In the year 1990, the Ludgate Hill station was broken down for the purpose of constructing City Thameslink railway station.
