History and divisions of London Government

London government is one of the important governing bodies of the city which looks after the proper administration of the city. Previously local government of London was divided into several small administrative districts known as London County Council, Metropolitan Board of Works and Greater London Council. Greater London Authority is the latest addition in this array of administrative divisions. The local government of London works and operates under the framing of Central government and the Central government is comprised mainly of Parliament and Government departments. The tasks of the London Government are distributed among several divisions like Defence department, Health department, Transport department etc.

GLA and the Mayor of London

The GLA or Greater London Authority is the well planned regional government division of London which is dedicated to look after the civic life of England. The GLA consists of two sections--London Assembly and Mayor. The city of London is the only one in England which comprises of its individually voted Assembly and Mayor as well. Greater London Authority along with the Mayor of London acts with the boroughs or the administrative districts and other departments like Government Office for London (GOL) and central government in

order to operate the Capital territory, and delineates the fundamental domains of responsibility.

GOL and its responsibility

The GOL or Government Office for London is devoted towards the implementation of several government policies regarding air quality, biodiversity, transport, noise, energy and spatial development. GOL also coordinates with GLA to access several grants for city development projects.
