London Districts

The London districts can be broadly classified into five divisions namely Central, North, South, East and West London. These districts are again subdivided as follows:

Central London: Bethnal Green, Southbank, Chelsea, Knightsbridge, Soho, Kingscross, Primrosehill, Camden, Islington, Marylebone, Shoreditch and Borough

North London: Highgate, Winchmore Hill, Hamstead, Muswell Hill, Highbury and Stoke Newington

East London: Canary Wharf, Wanstead, Bow London, Rainham, Hackney and Stratford

South London: Clapham, Wimbledon, Battersea, Kingston, Brixton, Richmond and Barnes

West London: Notting Hill, Chiswick, Wembley, Portobello, Queens Park, Kensington and Twickenham

As per the history of district formation in London, the year of 1858 saw the introduction of postal districts. Many changes have been made since then and today, London mainly consists of the above five districts.

Unique Point of the Districts

Each of the districts of London has its own attraction and specialty. Some of the uniqueness of the districts are mentioned below:
  • West London - It is famous for the aristocratic


    residential corners and some eye-catching shopping malls. Chelsea, Notting Hill and Kensington are among the most expensive residential areas of West London. Heathrow Airport is another prominent landmark of this district of London. Kings road, being a well known shopping area, is also located in West London.
  • North London – The hilly terrains of this district offer a serene natural view. Having a rustic look, North London houses some beautiful parks like Hampstead Heath and Alexandra Park. Suburbs of Highgate and Hampstead are a part of this London district.
  • East London – Docklands is the prominent location of this district of London. During the Second World War East London was completely destroyed by bombing. The district today is famous for such shopping zones as Petticoat Lane Market, Columbia Road Flower Market, Brick Lane Market and Spitalfields Market. South London – Wimbledon and Greenwich towns are the two major places of this London district. The Royal Greenwich Observatory is one of the prime attractions of the Greenwich town. Camberwell, Brixton and Peckham under the South London are known to accommodate the migrants from West Indies from 1950s to 1970s.
All the London districts have a well developed transit system. This helps the people of London to travel to any of the districts within a short span of time. Buses, tube and railway stations provide a proper infrastructure for the transportation facilities of London districts.
