Brent River

The Brent River is one of the many rivers that flow through the city of London.

The Brent River flows through the city of London and follows a course from the north-east direction to the south-west. It is one of the major rivers flowing through the city. The London Borough of Brent derived its name from the river itself when in 1965 the erstwhile boroughs of Willesden and Wembley were united into one. The river originates at the merging point of various streams like the Dollis Brook and the Silk Stream. It flows through Neasden to reach the Grand Union Canal Aqueduct.

The dwindling banks of the river Brent

The process of corseting of the river began during the 20th century. Prior to this, the width of the river Brent was much wider than it is now. Its width was limited owing to the water that was derived by the Canal Feeder. The river was about 5 feet in depth during the dry season. At the time of heavy downpour, the level of the river water rose to about 14 feet.

The water of the River Brent has become greatly polluted since 1886 due to the contamination caused by sewage disposals, rubber and oil. The rise in the rate of motor traffic down the River Brent is one of the major reasons behind this pollution. The water of River Brent, London is no longer as fresh as it used to be at one point of time.
