One of the oldest orchestras in the world, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1840. Run by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, the orchestra occupies the second position among the oldest orchestras in UK. Initially known as the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, it was renamed in 1957.
