Littlewoods Shop Direct Group started as a football pools company that was referred to as Littlewoods. It later attained fame as a catalog retailer in the year 1932. A Littlewoods departmental store was opened in the year 1937 at Blackpool making Littlewoods one of the leading retail companies in United Kingdoms.

As the business of Littlewoods retail shops flourished, 120 new outlets were opened throughout United Kingdom. Later in the year 2005 in the month of July, the Associated British Foods took over all the outlets and converted some of them into Primark branches. Some of the Littlewoods branches were sold off to other retailers. It was in the year 2005 that Littlewoods merged with Shop Direct that was into home shopping business and acquired the name Littlewoods Shop Direct Group.
