Before the construction of the Liverpool Lime Street Railway Station, the city terminal was situated at Crown Street. The construction of the station began in 1833 and the project was completed within 1836. The station soon became one of the busiest stations in the vicinity and as a result, plans for expansion of the same were undertaken. The expansion was complete by 1849. It was one of those stations that were electrified under the initial project of West Coast Main Line electrification. The process was complete by 1959. The station was also the first terminal from where the very first InterCity train services started.
