Sections of International Slavery Museum: a discovery

A unique museum, the International Slavery Museum consists of several galleries featuring exhibits that show the way the Transatlantic Slave Trade worked. The central focus is on Africa and the people of the African continent in context to transatlantic slave trade and slavery.

The museum also concentrates on the deplorable conditions of the slaves in the ships, the oppression that the slaves had to suffer at the plantations of America, and consequences of the slave trade on Africa, USA, the Caribbean, South America and Western Europe.

Moreover, visitors to the International Slavery Museum
can also learn about the struggle of the slaves for their freedom and basic human rights. One of the most significant features of the International Slavery Museum is the 'Black Achievers Wall'. This section has on display the biographies of prominent figures associated with transatlantic slavery. Another aspect of the museum focuses on the effects of the transatlantic slave trade on the modern society, especially racial discrimination. The achievements of the African people living in foreign countries are also highlighted at the museum.

Events at International Slavery Museum

The museum hosts many events related to slavery in the earlier times as well as today. The events at International Slavery Museum held during October, like the Black History Month, attempt to make the people of Britain aware of the contributions that the Blacks have made to British society. The subjects of the history of the Africans and that of international slavery are also taken up during this month.

Slavery Remembrance Day is another time when events related to Africans and slavery are held at the museum. The events include lectures, food and activities. The main aim of these events is to promote the issues related to slavery in the modern period and to spread the story of transatlantic slave trade.

Open everyday from 10 am to 5 pm, the International Slavery Museum is an attempt to make people residing in Liverpool and also those visiting the city from across the world aware of the various aspects of the transatlantic slave trade and the discrimination that the Blacks face in the present day.
