Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Britain. In 1901 Bishop Francis James Chavasse took the decision to build this Cathedral. The foundation stone was led by King Edward VII in 1904. Though the cathedral opened its door to people in 1910 the construction of the Cathedral was completed in 1961.
Liverpool Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral Church of Christ. The second Bishop of Liverpool, Bishop Francis James Chavasse, took the decision to build this Cathedral in 1901. A competition was held to choose the design of this Cathedral. Finally the design of Sir Gilbert Scoot was chosen.
King Edward VII laid the foundation stone of this Cathedral on St. James' Mount in 1904. The construction began from the east side of the Cathedral. The Cathedral dominates the surrounding landscape. The cathedral is visible from a great distance.

Cathedral including Chancel, Sanctuary, Eastern Transpets, Chapter House were opened in 19th July 1924. In 1978 the construction of this Cathedral was completed when Queen Elizabeth II started supervising the construction of this Cathedral.
Meanwhile, in 1940 services were held for the first time in this Cathedral. The city underwent major destruction during this time period as a consequence of war. However surprisingly enough the Cathedral escaped huge damage. In 1961 the construction of the bridge and the first bay of the Nave were finished.
