20th Century Liverpool


20th century Liverpool is marked by various social, political and economic changes in the city and the whole of United Kingdom. 20th century Liverpool was a period of changes and rapid developments. With Liverpool trade and industry at its apex, the city received a huge influx of immigrants from all over Europe. Welsh, Irish and Italian communities formed an important part of the population during that period and contributed largely towards the cultural diversity of the city.

20th Century Liverpool: Economy

Liverpool during the 20th century was at its apex of economic development and was regarded as the 'second city' of British Empire. The major industries in Liverpool include engineering, sugar refining, flour mills and cement manufacturing units. When the city was at its industrial and economic high during the 20th century, it suddenly witnessed a steep fall in its trade relations due to the recession periods of 1970s and 1980s.

20th Century Liverpool and the World War II

The epicenter of the Battle of Atlantic during World War II, Liverpool, was subject to more than eighty air raids that led to the complete dismantling of the Liverpool
infrastructure. Loss of life and property was immense and over 70,000 people became homeless. Post Second World War, the city saw innumerable construction projects like the setting up of housing estates and docks like the Seaforth Dock, which was the biggest dock project in Britain, and many others. The bombed houses and slums gave way to council flats and houses.

20th Century Liverpool : Constructions

Some of the major construction projects during the 20th Century in Liverpool include:
  • The Tower Building that was built in the year 1908
  • The Cunard Building that was built in the year 1916
  • The Port of Liverpool
  • The Lady Lever art gallery that was inaugurated in the year 1922.
  • The Queensway road tunnel that was built in the year 1934
  • The Roman Catholic Cathedral that was constructed in 1967.
  • The Kingsway Road Tunnel, that was constructed in the year 1971.
  • The Anglican Cathedral was established in the year 1978.
