Overview of Sharjah Municipality
Established in 1927, the contemporary form of Municipality in Sharjah came into existence in 1971, following the passing of a decree. This decree clearly stated the areas of operation of the Sharjah municipality, authorizing it to supervise all services associated with the basic requirements of the urban population. As a civil government organization, the Sharjah municipality passed through different stages of development.

Prominent among the activities of Sharjah Municipality is the construction of different types of parks and shopping malls. Ever since its foundation, the Sharjah Municipality is engaged in projects meant for building residential and public parks in various urban areas.

The aim of the Municipal Department of Sharjah in building parks is to offer the inhabitants of Sharjah and the tourists with some open areas, for recreational and sports activities.Today, the city of Sharjah possesses a total number of 21 parks, covering a total area of 411 thousand square meters. 12 gardens are under construction, which intend to cover the remaining of the Sharjah city. Besides, the Sharjah Municipality also worked towards the development of green fields and public places as well.
The city of Sharjah is also equally popular for a number of conventional markets or souks and shopping malls, constructed under the supervision of the Municipality in Sharjah. The beautiful Central Market or Blue Souk in Sharjah is perhaps one of the best instances of Arabic Islamic designs built by the municipality. The Al-Arsa Market, Old Souq, Mega Mall, Sara Shopping Mall are among the popular shopping business centers constructed under the guidance of the Municipality.
The latest activities of the Sharjah Municipality include repair of roads, improving the water sewage system and provide the citizens with facilities like streets lights, water, car parking zones, electricity, gas, and so on.
