Sharjah International Art biennial is one of the important cultural events of Sharjah. It was first started by the Department of Culture and Information of the Emirate of Sharjah. The grand event was organized to provide a common platform for the young artists and different art institutions to showcase their talent. This also enables them to exchange views and ideas about the art and culture with artists of various countries. The main focus of Sharjah International Art Biennial is painting, graphic arts and sculpture. In the recent years 'new art practices' like installation, video photography, performance digital and web art are making a foray.
The International Art Biennal at Sharjah is held in exotic locales and impressive venues. Sharjah Expo Center is one of the prestigious venues of Sharjah International Art Biennial. The Expo Center built in the year 1977. It is one of the official exhibition centers of Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Sharjah art museum, Sharjah heritage area, Qanat al qasba and Khalid lagoon are other eminent The Sharjah International Art Biennial 8 (SB 8) was held on 4th April 2007. This grand event was officially inaugurated by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, who is the member of the Supreme Council

This Art Biennial is an event which tend to assert different social issues and the role of visual art to address the issues like environmental challenges like pollution and the damage caused to natural resources due to excessive usage of natural resources. It also encourages new artists to stand up to these causes and produce their art work relevant to those issues. Renowned artist of UAE and the whole world, from diverse fields participate in this event to showcase their talent.
Sharjah International Art Biennials program include different exhibitions, performances and screening of films. More than 80 international artists got the opportunity to create art work pertaining to specific topics. Prizes are awarded to two winning artists of extraordinary caliber. Jury comprising of eminent personalities and judge their works of art. UNESCO also awards a special prize for Promotion of the Arts & the Young Digital Creator Award.
