Sharjah Geography


Sharjah is one of the important cities in the United Arab Emirates. The diverse natural features of Sharjah have enhanced its beautiful landscape, making it one of the prominent tourist destinations of the world. The city of Sharjah is situated on the salt strip, three miles deep running along the coast. The salt strip is commonly referred to as 'subkhat'. The geographical co-ordinates of Sharjah is 55.21° east longitude and 25.25° North latitude.

The city of Sharjah overlooks the Arabian Gulf in the West and the Gulf of Oman in the East. Three main provinces in Sharjah are the Batinah, Hisn Dibba, Khor Fakkan, and Kalba. It also encompasses islands like 'Abu Mousa', which is the main island and Sir Abu Nu'air.

Sharjah in UAE covers a land area of 2,600 square kilometers. The topography of Sharjah can be divided into two distinct regions, the sandy plains and the mountainous region. The sandy area extends to the Hajar Mountains in the west and the mountains are interrupted by rolling fertile plains. The Hajar mountain range is located in the eastern province of Batinah and rises to an altitude of 2,500 feet above sea level. This area has gravel beds and rich soil.

The exotic beaches in Sharjah attract the tourists to indulge in various kinds of water sports like fishing, snorkeling or diving. The rich mangrove forest at the southern most tip of UAE, has been declared a Nature Reserve and is a shelter to several endangered species of flora and fauna.

Sharjah hinterland is a vast expanse of red sand desert with sand dunes. Gravel plains fringe the borders. The fertile plains have rich and lush vegetation. Various natural parks and gardens are found in this region. Numerous 'wadis' or steep sided valleys dominate the landscape of Sharjah. Small villages are found interspersed in the fertile plains, or else nestled in the valleys.

Al Dhaid, a calm and serene palm oasis is renowned for growing best quality of strawberries and variety of fruits and vegetables. The main towns in the east coast of Sharjah are Khorfakkan, Kalba, Al Dhaid and Dibba Al Hisn.
