Sharjah Education


Sharjah education has underwent vast improvements in the last few decades. The UAE government has invested a considerable amount of money to ensure proper education among the citizen. Equal educational opportunities are provided to all the citizens of Sharjah irrespective of caste and gender differences. Most of the government educational institutions offer free education at all levels. However, the private education institution charges are comparatively less. Sharjah is considered as a pioneer city in respect of culture and education. The up to date curriculum and teaching standards have made the education institutes of Sharjah internationally recognized. The first official school in Sharjah was established in the 1950's. This old school building at the Heritage vicinity next to Souk Al Arsah and is still used for educational purposes.

Primary and secondary education, which extends up to the ninth standards, is compulsory in Sharjah. There are several multinational nursery, primary, secondary, higher secondary and undergraduate educational institutions in Sharjah. Since 1997, excellent universities have been established across the city. The federal education ministry successfully upholds its responsibilities towards private schooling in Sharjah. Regular inspections are carried out in the schools to maintain high quality of education.The present education system in Sharjah was last revised in the early 1970s. This system comprises 14 years of education, which is divided into certain stages and levels.

The kindergarten education is for 4 to 5 years old children and the age group for primary education is from 6 years to 12 years. The Preparatory education programme starts from 12 years and continues till 15 years. The secondary schools provide education to 15 to 17 year old students. After completion of this level of study students are awarded with the Secondary School Leaving Certificate. Interested students between the age group of 12 to 18 years can also attend the Technical Secondary School. Higher education in Sharjah has developed immensely over the years. There are several universities in the city that deal with diverse fields of study.

Some of the popular schools of Sharjah are Abdullah Bin Al Zabeer Preparatory School, Montessori Private School, Abdullah Bin Umar Prep School, Umm Al Fadhel Bint Hamza School, Al Khaledeya Secondary School, Wesgreen International School and many others. University City, Skyline College, Sharjah Men's College and Sharjah Women's College are some of the best colleges of the city. Sharjah also has special learning centers like The American University of Sharjah and Discovery Center, which caters to the special subjects required for higher education.

Sharjah is a culturally advanced city and is known as the land of the educated Arabs. Sharjah education system has scaled new heights and has received international acclaim for its quality of education.
