Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in the year 1971. The chamber was established to develop and build infrastructure following the oil boom in 1971. Since it's inception the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sharjah is doing a commendable job in boosting up the economy and industry in this region.
Sharjah Chamber of Commerce was first to identify the need to create a strong non oil sector. It felt the need to diversify in other related fields so that Sharjah economy does not solely have to depend on oil. Modern Sharjah is a well developed and self sufficient economy. Apart from oil industry, other ancillary industries have grown and developed. Textile and leather, basic non metal, food stuff and wood industries are other popular industries. Industrial sector in Sharjah contributes 9.6% of the total GDP of the country.

In the early 90's the Sharjah government joined hands with SCCI to promote and set up eleven industrial zones with state of art facilities and ultra modern infrastructure. The industrial zone has been built in the western part of the city covering a land area of 26 square kilometers. Total 2,649 plots measuring between 10,000 to 20,000 square feet were distributed. The plots are available at a cost price since, SCCI functions as a non profit organization.
Data Bank is a recent value added service of Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This Data Bank has extensive information about business activities both in the regional and international scenario. The touch screen of the Data Bank is made in a user friendly way so that the information is easily accessible. SCCI has recently introduced an on line information system relating to industry.
Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry is one of the important arm of the Sharjah Government. It is a key player in initiating industrial development and strengthening Sharjah's position as a major commercial hub in the world.
