The Sharjah Art Museum was established in 1995 under the supervision of Art Directorate of the Department of Culture & Information. The location of Sharjah Art Museum is at the Bait Al Serkal in Al Shuwaihiyeen area. Al Shuwaiheyn can be reached by availing any public transport reaching for the Al Boorj Avenue. The museum showcases the permanent collection of unique artworks on the ground level. Ever since its foundation, thirty-three individual and group exhibitions were held at the venue.
A new Sharjah Art Museum building was renovated and inaugurated on April 9, 1997 during the 3rd Sharjah International Arts Biennial ceremony. The building covers a total area of 111,000 sq. meters, with 2 stories, basement car parking lot and a roof deck. Sharjah Art Museum stands erect in the art area of Sharjah along with the other five heritage buildings including Islamic Museum, Sharjah Science Museum, Sharjah Archaeological Museum, Al Mahata Museum, Al Hisn Sharjah Fort and Sharjah Museum for Arabic Contemporary Art. Sharjah Art Museum consists of 68 halls of different sizes for exhibitions.
The halls also feature suspension systems for hanging paintings and other artworks of various weights. Some excellent mural works like photographs,ceramics and others are decorated all across the walls of the museum.

The basic color used is cream, but the wall and floor colors are complimentary to each other. The floors of the halls are covered with beige colored carpets and the corridors and ceilings are ornamented with gypsum works.
The special library with over 4000 collection of books and journals in both Arabic and English with audio-visual tapes based on fine arts and art related themes is set up in the reading hall and research unit. The visitors have access to Internet facility. A large hall with seating capacity up to 100 persons and with all audio visual equipments is available for lectures and seminars on fine arts. The administration, implementation and planning of the shows in this museum are done with efficiency and dedication by the museum staffs, who work in two shifts. The museum supervisors come to inspect the ongoing activities except on Monday.
Facilities at Sharjah Art Museum include cafeteria serving fast food and drinks, private halls to take rest or enjoy small gatherings, car parking area at the underground and tight security round the clock. Sharjah Art Museum is open daily from 9 am to 1 pm and 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The museum remains open on public holidays but is closed on every Monday. Entry is free into the museum. The exhibitions in Sharjah Art Museum have earned great recognition in the nation.
