The Damascus University is one of the premier education institutions in the country for the pursuit of higher education.
The Damascus University was the very first university to be established in Syria. It has gradually expanded over the years to become the biggest university in the country in terms of the total number of students. The Damascus University was established in 1923.
Damascus University-Foundation
The foundation of the University came as a result of the merging of the Institute of Law that was set up in 1913 and the School of Medicine that was founded in 1909.
The University of Damascus was known as the Syrian University till 1958. After the establishment of the University of Aleppo, the former underwent a change of name and was renamed the ‘Damascus University’. Following its establishment, the university went on to develop considerably after Syria acquired its independence in 1946.

At present the University comprises of several departments specializing in different branches of sciences commerce and humanities.

Other institutes in the city are also affiliated by the Damascus University. There are seven such institutes and it also includes the School of Nursing in Damascus. The Damascus University and the other universities in the country like the Universities of Lattakia, Aleppo and Homs are some of the few educational institutions across the world where scientific courses are imparted in Arabic. The Damascus University is the center for higher education in the country and strives towards academic excellence.
