The Oqaiba Neighborhood


Located outside the city of Damascus, the Oqaiba Neighborhood is a major attraction here. The region retains many of the old structures such as Al-Taoubah Mosque, Beit Soulaiman, Al-Azem Palace, and Al-Youssuf Family's House. All these structures represent the past glory of the city.

The Oqaiba Neighborhood is one of the main tourist destinations in Damascus. Located near the Souk Saruja, this place can be reached easily from the city.

Al-Taoubah Mosque:

The Oqaiba Neighborhood has the Al-Taoubah mosque which is a replica of the famous Omayyad Mosque. It was built in the Middle Age. Other than the Al-Taoubah you can find various other Arabic mosques and baths in this place.

Beit Soulaiman:

The Beit Soulaiman, popularly known as the Soulaiman's House is also situated in the Oqaiba
Neighborhood.This typical middle class house has its own charm. The small courtyard and the simple decoration of this house are typical of a Damascene household.

Al-Azem Palace:

The Oqaiba Neighborhood is also home to the Al-Azem Palace. The rulers of Syria, the Al-Azem family lived in this palace. Prime minister of Syria, Khaled Al-Azem has also occupied this palace during 1950s. The marvelous architecture of this palace is sure to leave you spellbound.

Al -Youssuf Family's House:

Al-Youssuf Family's house is another treasure of the Oqaiba Neighborhood. Some members of the Al-Youssuf family have held the post of ministers of generals during the reign of the Sultans of Ottoman Empire.

Devoting a whole day to explore the Oqaiba Neighborhood is worth the time and energy.
