Souk al-Hamidiyeh: The history
Souk al-Hamidiyeh or Hamidiyeh souk is the most well-known bazaar or souk located in the old city of Damascus. The history of this dazzling market place dates back to 18th century in the era of Ottoman rule. The first segment of the souk was constructed in 1780 while the second section was set up in 1883. This well-structured souk of Damascus was restituted and renovated at various times.
About the construction of Souk al-Hamidiyeh
The two storey high bazaar of Damascus is roofed with elevated iron vaulting. The sun beams are filtrated through the shields.

A number of holes are embedded on the roof of the souk which is evident of gun fire attacks during middle of 20th Century under the French rule.
Souk al-Hamidiyeh: Shops and Items
The most striking feature of Souk al-Hamidiyeh is its wide range of shops. Splendid handicrafts including embroidery on brocades, silver decoration on copper and extensive variety of ornaments allures tourists across the world. Travelers are advised to bargain at the time of purchasing any item from the souk. It is noteworthy that price bargaining is not applicable to food items, western brand items and to goods in departmental stores. Precious metals like silver and gold items are traded at a fixed price rate per gram.
Souk al-Hamidiyeh is famous for Baklavah and sweetmeats. The best quality sweet costs 700 SP per kilo. In addition, a great variety of ice cream and Syrian chocolates filled with hazelnuts are also sold at this souk.
