For instance, in year 2005 the closing ceremony of Damascus Festival for Culture Arts was organized at Damascus Citadel. The closing ceremony reminded the spectators of the eventful history of this site. The visitors came to know that the Citadel of Damascus was constructed in 1078 AD by Seljuks in order to secure the city from foreign attacks. This Citadel was encircled by towers and trenches to defend Damascus from intruders. Within the citadel houses, mosques and schools were constructed. In order to protect themselves from the attacks of the Crusaders several Syrian and Egyptian sultans used to take shelter in this citadel.
