Duraid Lahham


Duraid Lahham the most admired actor of Syria not only famous for his great acting in the role of 'Ghawaar' but also for unmatched performance in several political plays. Being an eminent actor he received a number of awards.

Duraid Lahham: Early days

Duraid Lahham, the star comedian and director of Syria was born in 1934 in Damascus, Syria. Born to an underprivileged family, Lahham worked for several arduous and unusual jobs to earn a livelihood in his early life.

Lahham has confessed that he was so very poverty stricken that he used to collect his dresses from the used clothes set aside for the poor people of Syria. All these hardships could not break his spirit and he took admission in Damascus University for studying chemistry.In his college days Duraid acquired great skill in Arabic folk dance called 'dabke' and nurtured his passion for acting. After finishing his studies in University, Lahham got the job of an instructor at the University Chemistry department.

Lahham as 'Ghawaar'

Several critics have described Duraid as all time best actor of Syria. The on-screen role which has made Duraid most well liked is "Ghawwar". His unique performance as 'Ghawaar' was much appreciated in the Arab world.

Latham's other performance and awards

Lahham gained high regard for his outstanding performance in various political plays. The plays of 1970s articulated a great analysis of the social and political conditions of Arab world.

In 1999 Lahham was designated as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to the countries of Northern Africa and Middle East. Lahham is bestowed with a number of awards. Some of the popular awards are as follows:
  • Excellence Class Medal of the Syrian Republic (1976)
  • The Order of Merit of the Lebanese Republic (2000)
