Constantin Zureiq


Constantin Zureiq, a renowned philosopher, thinker and academic in the Arab world, is a famous personality in Damascus. He was born in Damascus in 1909. His major work includes "The Arab Consciousness" that gave shape to Syrian nationalism.

Constantin Zureiq is the father of modern Arab nationalistic philosophy. His claim to fame is his contribution towards the building up of national feeling through his works.

Early Life of Constantin Zureiq

Constantin was born in 1909 in Damascus. Belonging to a Greek orthodox family, young Constantin was introduced to Arab philosophy by his father. The erudite surrounding helped Constantin to develop a philosophical bent of mind. He received his primary education from Damascene schools and completed higher education from American University of Beirut. He earned the degree of doctorate in 1930 from Princeton University of United states. In his early career, Constantin first worked as a diplomat before becoming a university lecturer which eventually led to his academic proliferation.

Academic Career of Constantin Zureiq:

Constantin Zureiq held the post of president in Damascus University in 1949. He became the vice-
president of American University of Beirut in 1952. He remained the acting president of this educational institute from 1954 to 1958.

Being an Arab intellectual and academic, Zureiq focused on the need for ethical revolution and rationalism in Arabic society. He is the key figure behind the intellectual awakening of Arabian culture. His first publication "The Arab Consciousness" was based on the lecture given by him in 1938.

Theories of Constantin Zureiq:

Constantin Zureiq is known for his theory "Arab Mission". He developed the theory of modern Arabic nationalism and his theory proved to be useful for nationalist thinkers of Arab. The fight for independence in Arab achieved new dimension after the publication of this book in 1939.

Zureiq was of the opinion that Arabians should assimilate the thoughts of the West but that should be perceived in accordance to the socio political scenario of the receiving end. He also introduced the theory of "national philosophy". Constantin Zureiq made significant contribution in Arab Nationalist Movement.

Important Work of Constantin Zureiq:

The major works of Constantin Zureiq include "What is to be done? An address to the rising Arab generations". He devoted his life to the social reformation of Arab.
