Citadel of Damascus

Citadel of Damascus can be described as a small city within a city. It was constructed in the 11th century. It looks like Ayybid masonry because of the huge towers, over leaped interiors and so on.

One of the primary attractions of the city Citadel of Damascus was built in the 11th century. Before the construction of this citadel the site used to house a Roman military camp. The citadel stood on the same ground level as the city. This feature made it different from other fortress of Syria. The citadel was located in the heart of the old city.

Structure of The Citadel:

The Seljuks constructed the Citadel of Damascus. It is surrounded by high walls on all sides. The Citadel of Damascus was a self-contained city.Apart from houses, it had a school, mosques, market, public baths, and all other amenities that are present in a city. The citadel dwellers did not have to go out of the
fort for their daily requirements. Special measures were taken to ensure the safety of the citadel. Tall watchtowers were constructed that were guarded by sentries. A moat ran around the citadel to prevent enemies from entering the fort. Deep trenches were cut to make the citadel inaccessible to enemies. The efficient security system of this fortress ensured the safety of the inhabitants.

Architectural Beauty of Citadel of Damascus:

The tourists are sure to get awed by the architecture of the citadel. The ruined double towers in the middle of the northern wall speak of the efficient security system. These towers protected the 'Gate of Iron' of the fort. Invaders had to pass through the five defended bends in order to enter the citadel.

The Citadel of Damascus is part of every itinerary of the city. The fort is a living example of the city's past grandeur.
