Aziz Al-Azmeh


Aziz Al Azmeh, the great writer and professor of Damascus is celebrated worldwide for his outstanding contribution in research works on medieval and contemporary Islamic society.

Aziz Al-Azmeh: Academic Qualification

Aziz Al-Azmeh, the eminent writer and profound scholar was born on 24th July 1947 in the city of Damascus. His educational life is adorned with several degrees and honors. In year 1971 Azmeh received his License-ès-Lettres in Philosophy and Sociology from University of Alexandria, also known as Beirut Arab University. Tübingen Eberhard-Karls University awarded him with Magister Artium in Philosophy degree in 1973 and in 1977 Azmeh achieved his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Oriental Studies from Oxford University.

Fellowships earned by Aziz Al-Azmeh

The Republican Order of Merit was granted to him for his contribution towards Arab Literature. The President of Tunisia bestowed him with this honor on May; 1993. Aziz Al-Azmeh was entitled for a great number of fellowships from various international institutes and universities. Few of those fellowships are presented below in chronological order:
  • Fellow of Nuffield Foundation (1993-1994)
  • Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin (1994-1995 & 1996-1998)
  • Fellow of the Swedish Collegium of Advanced Studies, Uppsala (1998)
  • Resident Scholar of Rockfeller Foundation Study Centre, Bellagio(2000)
  • Directeur de Recherches Associé, Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, Paris (2001)

Aziz Al Azmeh: The Great Professor

At present Aziz Al-Azmeh is designated as the Fellow of
Institute for Advanced Study, Budapest.Other than this, Azmeh is a well-known visiting professor of the Humanities Center of Budapest Central European Society. Formerly Aziz was associated with several institutes and organizations. For instance Azmeh served as Lecturer in the Faculty of Letters in Kuwait University from 1981 to 1983. From year 2000-2002, Aziz graced the position of Zayed Professor of Islamic Studies at the History Department of American University of Beirut.

As a visiting professor Azmeh was associated with several universities such as Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University New York, Cleveland Dodge Distinguished Visiting Professor at American University of Cairo, Sultan Visiting Professor at University of California, Berkeley. Since Aziz's primary focus is on the entire thematic scope of medieval and contemporary Islamic and Arab history, he is invited at several conferences throughout the world as speaker and participant as well.

Being a profound knowledgeable professor and writer Aziz is invited for several radio and television interview shows in order to share his thoughts with the world. His interviews are published in several regional and international periodicals as well.
