Azem Palace

Azem Palace was the home of Ottoman governor Assad Pasha al-Azem. It was built in 18th century AD. This building is a fine example of Damascene architectural style.

The Azem Palace is one of the major attractions of Damascus. The building reveals the Damascene architectural style. This 18th century palace was the home of Assad Pasha al-Azem, the Governor of Damascus during the Ottoman rule. Assad Pasha Al-Azem personally looked into the architectural details of the Azem Palace. He diverted the waters of the Barada River that flows through Damascus to water the gardens of the palace.

Location of Azem Palace:

Located at the center of the old city of Damascus, Azem Palace lies in close proximity to the Omayyad Mosque.
The marble and polychrome stones, which are used as building material, enhance the beauty of this palace. The sophisticated interior of this palace complements the simple exterior. The traditional Damascene design of the rooms reflects the taste and artistic skill of 18th Damascene architecture

Quarters of Azem Palace:

Azem Palace comprises a number of individual quarters. One of the quarters is for haremlek, one is for selamlek and the other one is for kitchen. The selamlek was the place where the governor used to meet and entertain his guests. The haremlek was the private quarter of the governor and his family.

At present the Azem Palace has been converted into a museum that treasures the popular art and tradition of Syria.
