Weltklasse Zurich, is one of prestigious one day athletics meet held annually at the Letzingrund Stadium in Zurich, Switzerland. Best athletes from all over the world participate in this gala sporting event. The Zurich Weltklasse is reputed as one of the best and most classy athlete meet in the world after the Olympics. Since it started in August 12, 1928, the grand sporting event has witnessed new world records and national records. Till date as many as 250 national records and 24 world records were set in Zurich Weltklasse.
In 1988, Carl Lewis set a new world record by completing the 10 meters race in just 9.93 seconds. This record was again broken by AsafaPowell when in 2006 he hit the finishing line in 100meters in just 9.77 seconds. The 2008 Weltklasse in Zurich is scheduled to be held on August 29, 2008, just five days after the end of Olympic Games in Beijing. To do away with pacemakers in the middle and long distance races.
More budget for the star athletes.

In 2007, the organization committee of Weltklasse Zurich had agreed upon more prize money for the participants with a clear view to establish a closer link between monetary rewards and their performance. However, star athletes insisted on more promotional agreements with a guaranteed sum. For 2008, they have reduced the prize money and increased the overall budget allocated for athletes from 2.6 million to 3 million Swiss Francs.
The decision to do away with pacemakers in the the middle and long distance races is equally significant. Majority of the public demanded races without pacemakers. The main program of Weltklasse Zurich 2008 will feature new events like 3000 meter steeplechase, 5000 meter steeplechase and the 4x100 meter relay race. The wheelchair race will be one of the most spectacular events in 2008.
