Hauptbahnhof is the Zurich main station that connects all parts of the city to the central area. It is among the busiest train stations in the world that serves more than 2,700 trains every day.
The Hauptbahnhof rail station was constructed between 1865 and 1871 on the site of the old railway station of Zurich. The Air Terminal from where the buses to Zurich airport plies, lies on the northern side of the main station. The railway centre of Bahnhofplatz is located on the southern part of the station, which is now solely reserved for traffic. In the square, a monument of Swiss statesman Alfred Escher was built in 1990. Below the square there is a concourse for pedestrians with a shopping area.
The ground floor of Zurich main station has 20 tracks constituting of Tracks 3 to 18 and Tracks 51 to 54. Tracks 3 - 18 serve the trains operating from all the

major cities of Switzerland and some of the international trains like the InterCityExpress, EuroCity, Cisalpino and TGV. Tracks 51 - 54 only serve the regional trains. Tracks 1 and 2, situated on the floor below are used exclusively by SZU S-Bahn trains. Tracks 21 to 24 are located another floor below and mainly serves the regional trains.
There is a huge underground shopping center at the main station comprising of more then 200 shops and stores. These shops are opened on Sundays. Some of the nearby attractions of Zurich main station are Church of Our Lady, Konditorei Sprungli, Zurich Art Gallery, Water Church and Criminology Museum. The main Zurich station serves the trains from all over Switzerland and other neighboring European countries like Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Austria. Zurich Main Station is the central and biggest railway station of the city.
