The three distinct levels of Zurich education are primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary level and the first secondary level are mandatory. The second secondary level is the post compulsory stage or the vocational training. The tertiary or the final stage of Zurich education can be pursued in the universities and the higher vocational institutes located in Zurich.

School Education in Zurich

Zurich schools provide primary education which is compulsory for all the students. The duration of primary education depends in which canton the school is located. It may last from 4 to 6 years. Lower secondary education, the duration of second phase in compulsory education is 3 to 5 years. To complete the post compulsory education in Zurich it takes 3 to 4 years.

Broadly, schools offering upper secondary education in Zurich can be divided into two categories.Majority of the students opt for the vocational secondary schools, which impart practical training and prepare the students for a wide range of occupation. Academic upper secondary schools in Zurich rigorously train their students and prepare them for the university entrance

examinations.

Higher Education in Zurich

Final and the tertiary stage of Zurich education is provided by different universities and higher vocational training institutes. 10 cantonal universities, 1 applied sciences university and 2 Federal Institutes of Technology offer ample scope to the students of Zurich to pursue their university education. Vocational certificates and higher vocational diplomas are awarded by the higher technical schools in Zurich.

Non University level of education in Zurich

To hone up professional skills and extend the general education numerous advanced vocational colleges are available. Universities of Applies Sciences (UAS) award professional diplomas on successful completion of 2 to 3 years of education.

Students wishing to seek admission in the universities of Zurich have to furnish a recognized school leaving certificate or an equivalent foreign certificate to gain entry into the university level. Universities also lay special stress on the knowledge of the student regarding the language of instruction. The academic year in Zurich universities generally start from September.
