The old city limits of Zurich has expanded between 1893 to 1934 by annexing neighboring municipalities within its boundaries. Today, the city of Zurich is divided into 12 districts known as 'Kreis' in German. These districts of Zurich are arranged in a clockwise direction around the main city center making it easier for tourists to map their direction. The modern city of Zurich is located at the heart of Zurich Canton attracting hordes of tourists every year with its scenic beauty and charm.
Zurich Districts
The first district of Zurich, Kreis 1 encompasses the Altstadt, Oberdorf and Neiderdorf regions. World class architecture like the Grossmunster and Fraumuster churches are located here. It is the artistic and cultural hub of Zurich with museums like Museum Rietberg and Swiss National Museum. The district is stacked with numerous hotels and cozy Italian restaurants.
Wollishofen, Enge and Leimbach form the second district of Zurich. Kreis 2 draws tourists from all quarters because of its lake front locations, historical castles and colorful nightlife. Many of the budget hostels are located in this quarter of Zurich.
Wiedikon, the third district of Zurich is one of the main business centers. All major industries are located in this area. Weidikon High School is a well known educational institution in Zurich located in this district. Major tourist attractions of this district are the old railway station and the ancient Buhlkirche. Several renowned restaurants are located in this part of the city. Maharaja Indian Restaurant at Weststrasse is a major crowd puller.
Assersihl or the Kreis 4 of Zurich is cosmopolitan in nature with mostly foreigners living here. Cultural diversity of Zurich can be truly felt in this region. Residing in this part of the city is an unique experience.
Kreis 5 is Zurich's northwestern part. Originally it was the industrial hub which was transformed into a recreation and a entertainment region during the late 1980s. Numerous theaters, cinema halls and modern apartments dominate this region. Department of Urban Development in Zurich regularly organizes walking tours in this region.

Oberstrass, Unterstrass and Wipkingen are the neighborhoods that make up the sixth district of Zurich. The Kreis 6 is just north of Altstadt. Major attractions in this area are the Zoologisches Museum and the Galerie Walchetum. The gallery is one of the best galleries of Zurich featuring works of all the contemporary artists.
Fluntern, Hottingen, Hirslanden and Witikon along the eastern territory forms Kreis 7 in Zurich. This generally belongs to the traditional upper class. As one of the popular tourist destinations, tourist come to see the cemetery of FriedhofFlutern.
Reisbach and Seefeld make up the 8th district in Zurich. It is one of the peaceful and tranquil districts of Zurich. Kantonsschule area at Reisbach is a center of scientific and research activities frequented by scholars and students of all ages.
Altstetten and Albisrieden are the 9th district of Zurich easily accessible from other parts of the city. It is known as the most family friendly district of Zurich with a number of schools, restaurants, playgrounds and also spas.
Kreis 10 covers the northwestern part of Wipkingen and Hongg. The picturesque landscape is a major draw of this area. However, the area does not have any hotel or accommodation facilities.
One of the northernmost districts of Zurich, Kreis 11 comprises of Affoltern, Oerlikon, Seebach and Schwamendingen. Zurich Open is held annually in this district and it also hosts Christmas Collector's Fair the biggest Christmas market in Zurich.
The last district or the Kreis 12 in Zurich is Schwamendingen. It is considered to be the district of warriors and bishops as it was the home of many eminent historical figures in the early 5th century. At present various organizations have come up in this region to promote sports and music.
Each of the districts of Zurich are unique in their own right and are very well organized for administrative purposes.
