Zurich Demography


Zurich demography accounts the population of Zurich, the changes in population, ethnic groups and the social structure of the city. The Zurich population counts up to approximately 1.2 million, which means around one-sixth of the total population of Switzerland. The federal state or canton of Zurich has an area of nearly 1,728 km2 distributed in 12 districts, 11 regions and 171 municipalities or communes.

A survey on March 31st 2007 showed that there were 371,767 people living in Zurich. 30% (around 111,530 people) of the inhabitants of Zurich do not possess Swiss citizenship. The Germans are possibly the largest group of foreigners living in Zurich, comprising 17.4% of the city's population. Large numbers of immigrants have come from Kosovo, Albania and Italy to reside in Zurich. The population of the metropolitan parts of the city comprises 70% of the total population. Almost 1.08 million people of the suburban region are included within the Zurich population.

According to the survey made in 2000, other than the original Swiss people, the Germans comprise 77.7% of the city population. The remaining ethnic groups comprise of Albanians (5.8%), Italians (4.7%), South Slavic Groups (2.2%). The official language of the Zurich is German. However, Zurich German or Zürichdeutsch is the most commonly spoken dialect in Zurich. Serbian, Macedonian, French, Croatian, Slovenian, Portuguese, Spanish and English are the other languages used for communication. The Zurich inhabitants mainly follow Protestantism, but during the 20th century some Catholic groups were formed in the city. According to a survey in August 2007, unemployment in Zurich was counted to be 2.6% of the total population.
