Umea is the largest city of Norrland in Northern Sweden. With a population of 105,500, Umea is the seat of the Umea Municipality and also the capital of Vasterbotten County. Umea is a major center of education, technical and medical research and has two Universities. With a large number of Students Umea is known for its educational Institutions and scholars they produce. One of the fastest growing Cities of Sweden, Umea has been expanding gradually for decades and the rate of this growth is really unique.

Situated on the inlet of the Gulf of Bothnia, Umea is positioned at the mouth of the Ume River which flows from the south of Vasterbotten. Located 600 Kilometers North of Stockholm and 400 Kilometers South of the Arctic Circle, Umea is often referred to as the regional center of northern Sweden. Umea has a distinct culture of its own and as made a mark on the Swedish culture on the whole.

The Opera culture of northern Sweden, the Norrlandsoperan, the world's northernmost opera house is based in the city. There are also a number of Museums in Umea and it also acts an active cultural center of Sweden with regular annual film festivals, jazz and chamber music festivals. With a cosmopolitan temperament Umea has over 100 different nationalities living together peacefully.
