Royal Swedish Opera

The Royal Swedish Opera is situated in the center of the city of Stockholm. It is one of the most popular theaters in Stockholm. King Gustav III established the Royal Swedish Opera company in Stockholm. The first performance at this opera house was Thetis and Phelee. It was staged on 18th January in 1773.

The former theater house was replaced by a new one in the 19th century. Both the former and the new theaters of Stockholm were known as the Royal Opera. Sometimes the former one is also known as the Gustavian Opera. The other theater house is known as The Oscarian Opera in Stockholm.

Gustav III assigned Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz to design the Opera House of Stockholm. Initially the Swedish Opera Company was set up at Bollhuset. But soon a separate building was constructed for the theaters.
The theater was opened in 1782 in a newly constructed building. Here masquerade balls were organized for for the common people.

The theater house was closed down by Gustav IV after his father King Gustav III was murdered in the theater house. Thereafter, no performances were held at this theater house till 1809. The theater house was reopened in the year 1812.

A new opera house was constructed by demolishing the former building in 1892. King Oscar II inaugurated this new opera house in Stockholm. The inaugurating opera at the new theater house was Estrella de Soria by Franz Berwald. This theater house came to be known as the Operan, over the years of time. It is also known as the famous Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. It has a seating capacity of about 1,200 people.
