Stockholm Municipality is an administrative body of Stockholm in Sweden. Among the 290 municipalities in Sweden, this municipality is considered to be the largest one. The official name of the Stockholm Municipality is known as the Stockholms kommun. It is also known by the name of City of Stockholm which is locally called the Stockholms stad.
Mainly the city center of Stockholm comprises the Stockholm Municipality. The suburb areas of west and south Stockholm are also included under the municipality of Stockholm. A reform was undertaken in 1971 which made the municipality of Stockholm a unitary body like the other municipalities of Sweden.
The Stockholm Municipality is administered by the Municipal Assembly. This assembly consists of 101 members. The tenure of the members of the assembly is 4 years and municipal elections are held to elect them. Every month for two times the council of

members arranges meetings.
A Municipal Executive Committee of Stockholm is elected by the Council which consists of 13 members. These members belong to both the opposition party and to the dominant political party. This body is responsible to implement the policies that the assembly has approved. The Executive Committee is headed by the Mayor who is also known as Commissioner of Finance.
There are 14 districts under the Stockholm Municipality. Initially the total number of districts was 18 which were reduced to 14 on January, 2007. The District Councils are responsible for looking after the administration of these districts. The councils are also assigned to take care of primary education, social, recreational and cultural activities of the districts. These districts act as committees of the municipality of Stockholm. The municipal assembly directly elects the members of the District Councils.
