History of Moderna Museet Stockholm
Moderna Museet is located at Skeppsholmen, SE-103 27 Stockholm. The museum, a huge store-house of traditional and modern arts was first started in 1958. At that time a drill-house of the navy in the Skeppsholmen Island was used as home of this museum. The drill-house now houses the Museum of Architecture.
In course of time the spread of modern art increased vastly in Sweden and a number of important exhibitions started taking place during the 1960’s. Music, films, displays for children and other important events and happenings started becoming part of the museum.
A larger area and a new structure became the need of the day that eventually resulted in an architectural contest in 1989, to find the best architect to build the new museum. It was then that architect Rafael Moneo was chosen for the job, who eventually constructed the Moderna Museet in 1998.
