Langholmen is located between Kungsholmen and Sodermalm in central Stockholm. Langholmen Island is a favorite destination for local people of Stockholm. Formerly a prison was located at Langholmen, which is now one of the notable hotels of the place.
Langholmen has become a popular spot for picnic. Tourists can also go for swimming in Langholmen. This place is also ideal to take an evening stroll. In summer Langholmen is crowded by tourists and local people.
The island of Langholmen was initially very rocky. The prisoners living in the island covered it with mud from nearby waterways. Years later, parts of the island were

full of greenery due to the fertile soil.Flower gardens were set up in the island. The merchants passing by this island brought variety of seeds to this place.
Langholmen used to house a prison till 1975. In 1989 the prison house of Langholmen was transformed to a hotel to offer accommodation to tourists. This building was renovated between 2007 and 2008. A pub and a restaurant were also set up at Langholmen.
A model of a plane made from stainless steel has been put up in this island. This sculpture by Thomas Qvarsebo was erected after a JAS 39 Gripen fighter plane crashed in the same spot in Langholmen in 1993.
