Stockholm, the capital of Sweden was established in the year 1252 by Birger Jarl. The city gradually developed with trade, culture and transportation facilities with other countries.
However during these periods, many events have taken place, which now form a major part of the Stockholm history.
Different Phases in Stockholm History
- 13th Century: After the city of Stockholm was formed in 1252, it traded with Sweden and other countries in the Baltic region. Initially the people had settled along the Lake Malaren but as trade routes were formed, people shifted to the Old Town. In the year 1270, Riddarholm Church was established in the Old Town. The Battle of Brunkeberg took place in 1471 in Stockholm in which the Danish King Christian I was defeated by the Swedish forces led by Sten Sture.
- 14th -15th Century: During this period, the city was widened and rearranged. In 1376, the figure of King Eric IX was seen in the seal of the city.

The people who inhabited this city were mostly Germans and therefore the buildings were constructed in the German style.
16th – 18th Century: The Stockholm Bloodbath (1520) is a major event in the history of Stockholm. More than 82 Swedish noblemen were murdered brutally at the Great Market in Old Town by the Danish Emperor Christian II. In 1611, Gustav II Adolf acceded to the Swedish Throne, who turned Sweden into major country of Europe with Stockholm as its powerful city. Sweden became independent and Stockholm was formally declared its capital in 1634. After the completion of the Royal Palace, the Swedish Royal family shifted to the location in 1754.
19th – 20th Century: In 1862, the Stockholm City Council became the supreme governing body with the passing of the legislature. In 1878, colleges and universities started to function. There were more number of public buildings, hospitals, post offices and railway stations. This period also saw the growth of culture and Stockholm becoming a cosmopolitan city. In 1998, Stockholm became the cultural capital of Europe for its multi-faced social and cultural activities.
