History of Beckholmen
The history of Beckholmen dates back to the year of 1848, when Sweden Government decided to construct a new shipyard to accommodate the growing number of vessels and steamships. The appropriate location of Beckholmen made the place a favorable destination for ship builders.
The Shipping Industries had erected the two dry docks on the island that measured 75 meters and 45 meters, respectively. The region's first bridge, Beckholmsbron conveniently connected Djurgarden with Beckholmen. After, sometime, the two docks were re-constructed in two successive stages during 1870s and 1890s,where the length of each of the docks was increased to 102 meters and 99 meters, respectively.
The island became an integral part of the Swedish Navy administration in the year of 1918. The Navy of Sweden had constructed the third dock, popularly known as The GV- Dock during the period between the years of 1923-1925.
Beckholmen- A Tourist Attraction
Beckholmen draws several tourists from far and near who are enthralled at the splendid buildings that represent the marvelous architecture of the ancient times. Beckholmen reflects the rich maritime history of the Stockholm through its collection of different types of ships.
The GV-dock still serves as the important commercial base of Stockholm that allows trading transaction between Sweden and other countries. Beckholmen has preserved the unique naval history of Sweden through its excellent architecture and well designed ships.
